After another disappointing Saturday, I started wondering why we get so upset when our favourite rugby teams get beat. Why do we even have a favourite team? Why are some teams supported more than others? It is easy to understand why we support the Springboks, after all, we all have a sense of national pride. But, why do we have a favourite provincial team?
Is it because of location and the area we live in? No, there are more Sharks supporters in Jo'burg than there are in Durban.
Is it because we like to watch "our" team play live? No, there are more empty seats at Ellis Park during a Lions game than there are at a Status Quo reunion concert.
I finally found the answer. It's all about hair.
Take Patrick Lambie (please do, take him anywhere). He has the most stupid haircut in world rugby. And Ryan Kankowski, all that money and an extremely offensive haircut. And as for Charl Mcleod... Yet the Sharks have a huge fan base.
The Bulls have Zane Kirchner, Akona Ndungane, Mtunzi Mabeta and Jacques Potgieter, all of whom should be shot for their hairstyles. And the Bulls are the most supported team in provincial rugby.
As for the Stormers, they have Schalk Burger, Eben Etzebeth and Joe Pieterson, who collectively have the most ridiculous haircuts on the planet, and the fans queue up to watch them, week after week.
And the Lions? Not one stupid haircut in the whole team, apart from Josh Strauss, who wears his upside down, so that doesn't count.
So its simple, the more comical haircuts you have on your team, the greater your support... Are you listening Lions?
